How to Choose a Pickleball Paddle: Power vs Control vs All-Court

Buying a pickleball paddle gets confusing quickly because there are a lot of materials, shapes, thicknesses and technical numbers to compare. The easiest place to start is simpler: how do you want the paddle to feel when you play?

For most players, the first useful choice is between a power-oriented paddle, a control-oriented paddle and an all-court paddle.

Power paddles

A power-oriented paddle is built for players who want a more direct response and more pace when they accelerate through the ball. That can be useful on drives, counters, overheads and put-aways.

Power does not mean you lose all control, and it does not mean every thinner paddle automatically plays the same. Face material, core construction, shape, static weight and swing weight all contribute to the final feel.

Within Synergy, the Power Paddle Sets collection includes options such as SUPREME, BLAST and PASSION.

Control paddles

Control-oriented paddles put more emphasis on touch, placement and a predictable response. Players who spend a lot of time resetting, dinking, dropping and moving the ball into specific areas of the court often prefer this type of feel.

Synergy's Control Paddle Sets include ROYALE and ELEVATE.

All-court paddles

An all-court paddle is the middle path. It is intended to give you a useful mix of control and power rather than pushing heavily toward one end of the spectrum.

For players who are not sure where they fit yet, that can make the buying decision easier. Synergy's EXPLORE 16mm is the brand's everyday all-court option. It uses a 16mm carbon fiber construction and is available in Brown, Pink, White and Blue.

What does paddle thickness change?

Thickness is useful, but it should not be treated as the only performance number that matters. All else being equal, thinner cores often feel firmer and more direct, while thicker cores often feel more muted and control-oriented. In real paddles, however, face material, foam, core construction, shape and weight can change that result.

For example, Synergy's current lineup includes a 13mm SUPREME power paddle, 14mm BLAST and PASSION power paddles, and 16mm ROYALE and ELEVATE control paddles.

Do not ignore weight and swing weight

Static weight tells you how much the paddle weighs. Swing weight is a separate measurement that helps describe how heavy the paddle feels while moving through a swing. Two paddles with similar scale weights can still feel different in motion.

If quick hands are important to you, do not choose from thickness alone. Compare the full specifications on the product page.

A simple way to choose

  • You want more pace and pop: start with the power collection.
  • You care most about touch and placement: start with the control collection.
  • You want a balanced everyday paddle: start with an all-court option such as EXPLORE.
  • You are brand new to pickleball: a complete beginner set may make more sense than buying every item separately.

There is no single paddle that is automatically best for every player. The better choice is the one that fits how you actually play.
