13mm vs 16mm Pickleball Paddles: What Actually Changes?
Core thickness is one of the first numbers shoppers notice on a pickleball paddle. It matters, but it is easy to give it too much credit.
A 13mm paddle and a 16mm paddle can feel very different, but thickness is only one part of the build. Surface material, core construction, foam, paddle shape, static weight and swing weight also matter.
The general difference
As a broad rule, thinner paddle cores tend to feel firmer and more direct, while thicker cores tend to offer a more controlled, cushioned response. That is a useful starting point—not a guarantee.
13mm: a more direct feel
Players who want a quicker, firmer response often gravitate toward thinner paddles. Synergy's SUPREME uses a 13mm Kevlar construction and is positioned as a power paddle.
Current SUPREME specifications list an average weight of 7.85 oz, swing weight of 116 and twist weight of 5.85.
14mm: a middle step
Synergy also offers 14mm carbon fiber power paddles. BLAST lists an average weight of 7.85 oz and swing weight of 112. PASSION is also a 14mm carbon fiber power model.
This is a good reminder that you do not need to reduce every paddle decision to only “thin” or “thick.”
16mm: more emphasis on control
Within the Synergy lineup, ROYALE and ELEVATE are 16mm control-oriented paddles. ROYALE uses a Kevlar-and-carbon construction and lists an average weight of 8.35 oz, swing weight of 122 and twist weight of 6.35.
EXPLORE is also 16mm, but it is positioned as an all-court paddle rather than a dedicated control paddle. Its listed average weight is 7.7 oz with a swing weight of 111.
Why two 16mm paddles can still feel different
Thickness does not tell you where the weight sits, how the face responds, how the core is built or how quickly the paddle moves in your hand. That is why a 16mm all-court paddle can feel different from a 16mm control paddle.
Which thickness should you choose?
- Choose based on feel first. If you like a firm, direct response, look at thinner power-oriented options.
- If touch and placement matter most, compare 16mm control models.
- If you want balance, a 16mm all-court model can still deliver useful power without being designed as a pure power paddle.
- Compare the complete spec sheet. Thickness alone is not enough.
